SmartSuggest is currently in beta.
SmartSuggest provides you with real-time suggestions for translations while you’re translating in the PhraseApp Translation Editor. By enabling SmartSuggest, you can speed-up your actual translation work and achieve a better overall consistency.
How to enable SmartSuggest
You can enable the feature in the Advanced tab of your Project Settings for each project where you want to work with SmartSuggest. Make sure to at least select include glossary terms or include machine translation.
With SmartSuggest enabled in your Project Settings, you can turn it on in the Translation Editor by ticking the checkbox once. However, you can choose to enable or disable it anytime while you’re editing the locale you’re translating to. Right above the editing window you can make your choice with a single click. SmartSuggest will indicate to be Ready or Disabled.
Your translation workflow with SmartSuggest
When SmartSuggest is enabled, you will be accompanied by a small dropdown menu that automatically provides you with suggestions for your translation, word by word. You can easily browse the suggested translations with your keyboard’s up and down arrow keys. In order to accept a suggested word that suits you and move on to the next one, you can either press tab or enter. The former will keep the suggestion dropdown menu open for you, while the enter key will select the word and close the dropdown menu for you to take a look at your sentence without potential distractions. Just type in a new character and it will show up again.
Saving translation time
With machine translated suggestions, you can be up to 20% faster in your actual translation work. Because SmartSuggest has your translations ready in real-time, you can quickly select longer and complicated words with just the push of a button.
Gaining overall consistency
SmartSuggest works seamlessly with your Glossary, a directory consisting of terms, their definitions and the meaning of any terminology unique to your business. If you have made entries to your glossary, SmartSuggest will consider this and include these entries in the suggestions. SmartSuggest labels the term for you to identify it and apply the correct translation. This allows you not only to be quicker but also assures you with an extra notch of consistency throughout your entire project.
Less prone to errors
Using SmartSuggest, you are far less likely to make mistakes while translating. By establishing a workflow with machine translated suggestions you can avoid annoying pitfall of misspellings. This allows you to improve the overall translation quality of your projects.
Your on the fly instant dictionary
With SmartSuggest you don’t have to leave the Translation Editor to look up a word you can’t think of at the moment in an online dictionary anymore. Just browse through the suggestions right where you’re translating and pick the translation that fits best.
Where do the suggestions come from?
If SmartSuggest is enabled, your translation data will be sourced via the machine translation service of Microsoft Translate.
Does SmartSuggest influence my overall machine translation contingent?
Can I only use SmartSuggest for specific keys?
You can use SmartSuggest for every key you like, on the condition that it is enabled both in your Project Settings as well as in the Translation Editor. In this beta version, the syntax of array keys might not be fully supported.
How many suggestions do I get?
The amount of suggestions being shown depends on the length of the text you’re translating. The maximum number of suggestions in the dropdown menu is 50.
Does it work for any language?
For the time being, it works for any language except Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. We’re on it.
How is SmartSuggest different from Autopilot?
With the feature Autopilot you can automatically translate new keys, locales or files into multiple languages directly after uploading them to PhraseApp. It automatically prefills all the translations for all locales you have set in your project. SmartSuggest also uses machine translation and has all the translations ready in the background as well, but gives you the freedom to access them word by word along your actual translation work. For instance, you can use the suggestions of SmartSuggest for one sentence, while you translate another entirely on your own.
Do I have to enable ‘machine translation’ in my project settings to be able to use SmartSuggest?
Yes, you do. Go to your Project Settings to tick the box, if not enabled already.
Can I get suggestions from Google Translate?
No, for the time being it uses Microsoft Translate for getting it’s suggestions. However, SmartSuggest still works if you select Google Translate as the machine translation service of your choice in your Account Settings.
